Your pain is heard Sister. As a Black woman, you are carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. Taking care of kids, building your career/business, and facing many injustices in the world that are often ignored. Society has taught you that you are a strong Black woman and indeed you are. However, being strong never meant neglecting you. Being strong means taking care of that bold, brilliant, black image staring at you in the mirror, yourself.
Nourish Yourself
Remember your vehicle requires gasoline to run, and your body is no different. You must pour into you. Ask these simple questions, “how am I feeding myself” and “what am I feeding myself”. Since you are made in the image of God you are priceless. Would you enter a mansion and deface it with garbage? What is stopping you from treating your body in the same way you would a mansion? This does not mean that you will drink smoothies every day and eat salads. However, it does mean that you will consistently fuel your body with the proper nutrition.

Mental Detox
Your body is not the only part of you that needs your attention. Your mind requires care as well. Stress is a silent killer. According to the CDC 42% of Black women are living with high blood pressure. In maintaining mental well-being, allow yourself to unplug from the cares of the world. Take time out for yourself to do something that brings you joy. Whether it is aromatherapy, yoga, or music therapy, find an activity that relaxes your mind, body, and soul. Once you discover those activities carve out time daily at least 10 minutes to reconnect with your inner peace.

Loving Yourself
Above all, please don’t forget to allow loving yourself to take place. Love is the foundation that keeps Black women grounded. Drawing from our ancestors, we are able to understand that our community was built on us loving ourselves without apology. Sister, you are fearfully and wonderfully made. No matter who attempts to diminish your value know your worth and keep loving yourself. Affirmations are a wonderful way to provide emotional support and remind yourself of how wonderful you are.

Nurturing the soul of a Black woman involves connecting to every part of who you are: physically, mentally and through love. It doesn’t happen overnight. Yet each moment you give to yourself is a moment closer to being where you deserve to be holistically.
